Bujold always has thoughtful things to say about illness, injury, age and what it means to be human, but don't read this book for that, read it for the excitement, romance and space battles.
This book exemplifies many of the things I love about Bujold's work. Brilliant space opera, with a great mystery to solve... but the real question is what happens when young Miles, living the perfect boy's fantasy double life - future count, secret spy, and admiral of a mercenary fleet.. makes a big mistake, and might have to grow up?
This is the 5th time I’ve read this book and I’ve loved it every time. This may be my favorite of her Vorkosigan novels. We get to see the transition of Miles as young and impulsive to Miles as older and... a little less impulsive. As always it’s a joy to watch him flounder around and then pull himself out of the mess while somehow simultaneously solving the problem. This time around I also liked learning more about the side characters like Simon, Ivan, Gregor, and Duv. We get to see more of them in future novels and it was nice to see them now while knowing what lies in their future.
One of Bujold's greatest works.
Complex plot and characterization. One of the best from my favourite author.
Fantastic space opera. One of the best in the Vorkosigan series.
A typical Miles Vorkosigan adventure. Clever, witty and a wholelot of fun.
