This early Kate Quinn effort displays her exceptional talent right from the beginning. It's well written, with smooth dialogue, well rounded believable characters, & a solid story & plot. The main characters were especially likeable/interesting. The book dragged a bit in places but that might be due to my own impatience to race through the story. Usually, when reading Roman stories, I have trouble following characters because of their the long names -- I didn't have that problem here. Thoroughly enjoyable!

All the main characters, except 2, die (boo, hiss). Also way too long.

Kate Quinn is my favorite historical fiction writer who brings the Roman world to life with compelling characters. Her novels are a mix of historical and fictional characters who make ancient Rome feel as vibrant as today. This latest entry in the Empress of Rome series features Sabina, the wife of Hadrian. During the book's 20-year span, the reader is drawn into both the spectacle and horror of Hadrian's reign. As Hadrian travels throughout his empire, Sabina becomes a valued advisor to her husband. This book is a testament to all the twists and turns of long-term relationships -- both friendly and hostile.
