Stump the Librarians: Books to Movie

Last week, our librarians Tanya and Shellie had a blast chatting with Charles Dowdy at The Lake 94.7! In an attempt to stump the librarians, Charles asked what books had been recently made into movies. As will happen, Tanya and Shellie were like deer in the headlights. Shellie did come up with the super well known movie  Hidden Figures and the fabulous book  Hidden Figures Tanya mentioned… (more)

A very good movie based on a true story.

I loved this movie. Mostly because I am an animal lover, second because I am a mother and value life more now than before and lastly because it reminded me of the compassion people still have for one another. They are willing to risk their own comforts and life to save another. Even if it is just one.

**Spoiler Alert**
The hardest part to watch was when the husband saw the young lady being walked to the alley way by the soldiers "knowing" what they were going to do but also knowing he couldn't intervene. How that must have put so much pain onto his heart in that very moment. As a mother of a teen daughter that part hit home HARD and gave me goose bumps in this moment as I remember while writing this review.

The movie was beautifully done. All of it. Now to hear the story from those who lived it from the Jewish side would be enjoyed as much if not more.

A very well acted, suspense filled movie that will have your heart pounding. There were 2 religions during World War II that were attacked by the Nazis: the Jews and the Christians. Of course, this movie only mentioned the Jews do to the biased Hollywood. So keep that in mind. And brief sex stuff between the married couple is not in itself bad, but we as a audience don't need to see it. It is only for them and them alone and was not needed to tell the story. Thank God for fold-able screens. Between the religion and sex situation, they destroyed the movie. Not recommended.

Another good thing about the movie was that there was no language or profanity in any way whatsoever.

Good film, mostly based on the actual events that inspired the movie, though I did not appreciate the added sexual tension.

a well done movie!

A moving story about life during WWII. A true story about the Zabinski saving hundreds of Jewish lives.

they did an amazing job with the film only con is that it is not 100% accurate to the story but hey that comes with the territory of book to film adaptation

I borrowed the movie thinking it would be similar to another movie called "We bought a Zoo", turns out I was wrong but I decided to still watch the movie. This movie is really good and it will make you think what was happening in Poland during that time. This movie is really touching as it shows what happened to Poland during a war with the Nazis.
Total recommend watching it!

Having read the book, I was disappointed that the sexual tension between Antonina and Lutz had to be added to the movie considering this wasn't a true part of her story and that her husband's heroism was downplayed.

It's not your fault. You have always been so good to me, Miss. You and your husband. Now, I'll be good to you. Be careful.
Dr. Korczak... Where are they taking you?
-We are going to a land called Ro, to visit a great magician there. His name is Zi. He's a very good friend of mine.
Yes. Dr. Korczak, my car is outside the gate. It's just outside, just there.
-It's impossible. I need your help now, or the fear will be unmanageable. God bless you, Dr. Zabinski.
They'd be our guests until we found them refuge.
-A human zoo.
Dr. Korczak. But then what of the children?
-What of them, Dr. Zabinski? My heart is no different than yours. I should not be here, they should not be here, you should not be here.

A good German:
Uh... Szymon told me about you. He... said some, um... interesting things. Uh... Listen to me. The ghetto walls were built against our Labor Bureau building. We have two doors. One opens into the free side of the city, the other, into the ghetto. In one way, out the other, you understand me?
I will give you papers that will give you access either way. Dr. Zabinski,
welcome to the Labor Office. You can take the workers out, I will see that
they are signed back in. ... (To German soldiers) This is Dr. Zabinski. He works for me. You will allow him through whenever he comes or goes. ... Look, this is Dr. Zabinski, he's allowed to pass through every time.

Herr Heck has taken over the Berlin Zoo from his father. And his brother
runs the Munich Zoo.
Maybe she should play a German waltz. We may all be learning the goose-step within a year.
People always want to run when they don't know what's coming. It's their first instinct, always to run.
They called me Urszula.
-Urszula means "she-bear." Did you know that?
Yes. My father used to say it. Good evening. Hello. It's almost "bearable" today.
You have no idea what kind of man I am.
-Oh, but I do. I do, Lutz. You are a serious man. You're a man of intelligence
and of breeding. Not the kind of man that would shoot a child.
What have you been up to, Frau Zabinska, in your little zoo?
