Earthquakes. You need to worry about them only if you're in San Francisco, right? Wrong. We have been making enormous changes to subterranean America, and Mother Earth, as always, has been making some of her own. . . . The consequences for our real estate, our civil engineering, and our communities will be huge because they will include earthquakes most of us do not expect and cannot imagine - at least not without reading Quakeland. Kathryn Miles descends into mines in the Northwest, visits the South to see what the Army Corps of Engineers in Memphis is learning about the next major US quake, uncovers the horrific risks of an earthquake in the Northeast, and interviews the people around the country who are addressing this ground shaking threat.

I enjoyed the author's visit to the Fed Ex headquarters and how they prepare for a major disaster (such as an earthquake). How the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) that runs under San Fransisco Bay would handle an earthquake incident. Or what happens with mining/fracking and earth changes they cause. And of course where the next big quake may occur.

This is a well written and fascinating book. Highly recommend it for anyone interested in earthquakes, mining, drilling, fracking, continental drift and/or geology in general.

Who thought prophecy of death, despair and destruction could be so interesting? I applaud the author for blending a variety of information in such an engaging fashion without a hint of domesday drama. Anyone living in Kansas needs to listen up. The big one is going to affect us in some fashion. One way or another. Trust me. Tuck and roll or duck and cover won't be sufficient.

Good update on Earthquake Country today. Well-written with memorable characters.
