Toshinari Seki takes goofing off to new heights. Every day, on or around his school desk, he masterfully creates his own little worlds of wonder, often hidden to most of his classmates. Unfortunately for Rumi Yokoi, his neighbor at the back of their homeroom, his many games, dioramas, and projects are often way too interesting to ignore; even when they are hurting her grades.

Manga Mania, Week 1

Manga is a term used to describe comics and graphic novels created in Japan.  Since the boom of the United States' manga distribution in the mid to late 2000s, many series have found their home on our shelves.  And with so many titles to go through, Manga Mania is a 4-part series where we go through a few titles for different age groups!  This week, we will be covering series available in… (more)

If you'd like to read a manga, but you don't want to commit to a fifty-volume story line full of death, destruction, and cliffhanger endings, take a look at this manga! Each chapter is a complete drama-in-miniature about a student being distracted by the elaborate games and activities a nearby student is carrying out during class.

Lol, this Manga is defferently a comic.

Imagen your self trying to focus on your work while in class, and you have that really active classmate that sits next to you. Who never does his or her work. But instead plays and fools around.
That's exactly what Rumi goes through, but you would think it would be annoying. But to tell you the truth if I had Seki as a classmate. And I sat next to him. he would make my day more and more. I would be happy to go to school all the time.

I think its funny that Rumi blames him every time she distracted and cannot focus on her studies. But I feel like that just an excuse and that she just easily distracted. Not to mention apart of her just wants to be distracted.

But I love her reactions to the things she does, I esp love the fact that they have that connection to one another that they don't need to speak. They can communicate without talking to one another.

The things that happens in this manga will keep you entertain and wanting to find the next book soon.

Delightfully funny, with a charming pair of characters. The studious Yokoi just wants to get through class without distraction, but that is barely possible when sitting next to someone like Seki, a boy who spends class inventing wonderfully weird games, and enacting emotional stories with his toys. As he plays, Yokoi gets annoyed, or invested in what he is doing to the point where she gets in trouble with the teachers. For the most part My Neighbour Seki is an internal monologue, with Yokoi commenting on the stories unfolding, and deciding whether to help or hinder Seki as her mood swings. Seki never speaks (at least as of volume three), but with Yokoi's commentary, and the artist's use of expressive and funny facial reactions, it is never hard to tell what he is thinking. Each chapter is an individual episode, and each gag feels fairly unique; even when it seems like the same formula is about to be used, it isn't (there are recurring toys like the Transformers family). Whether an extended narrative will develop has yet to be seen, but as it is, this is fine. If you are looking for some light-hearted silliness and a quick read, My Neighbour Seki is highly recommended.
