Released in 2001, Rainbow Boys was one of the first well-known books about the struggles of LGBTQ+ youth. Even though it is now 16 years later, Rainbow Boys still holds up as a very realistic view of life for a gay teenager. The plot revolves around three boys - Jason, Kyle, and Nelson - as they deal with issues such as coming out, homophobic hate crimes, unrequited love, HIV, losing ones virginity, and Internet usage. Although one could worry that it'll be five seasons of Degrassi cramped into one book, Sánchez's writing evenly spaces out each event as the narrative switches from each boy's point of view. There's a character for everyone in Rainbow Boys to relate to, even today, so it is absolutely a recommended read for LGBTQ+ teens.

Adolescent yearning is always an excruciatingly slippery slope, difficult to navigate and impossible to climb without falling flat on your face unless you are a bastion of unassailable confidence. The three boys who are the main focus of this novel have the additional burden of being gay.

The novel alternates adeptly among the boys’s three viewpoints, capturing their individual “voices” so clearly you can almost hear them speaking in your head. Their yearnings to fit in and stand out are almost painful to read. None of them are sure about what they’re doing; even the defiant Nelson with his flamboyance and defiant outspokenness to the school bullies can mess up big time.

The novel doesn’t downplay the harshness of modern American society towards homosexuals; even straights that associate with gay people can be censured with their sympathies. At the same time, we realize that Nelson, Jake and Kyle are just like other teenaged boys—all unsure of themselves and making their tremulous way in a world that can seem utterly baffling to them.

I adored each and every one of these three. While I don’t know just what will happen to them, if or how they’ll stay together in the future, I found myself rooting for their battles to be happy individuals. More power to them.

I enjoyed this book, it was quite good, but at times very easy to see what's coming. But great. Loved it.

the movie scene is worth reading the whole book for. You fall in love with these charaters: Jason and his sweetness, Kyle and his unrealized courage and Nelson and his determination to fall in love.
We all have a little bit of these three guys in ourselves. And for those who are not impressed by thier struggle - it illustrates how far we have come

Basically Gossip Girl for a gay teen boy. Which is great, but it is not a life changing piece of literature or anything. Just something fun to read.
