With Speak's author adapting her book to a graphic novel format and Emily Carroll providing illustrations, this is a suspenseful, haunting story of a teenage girl's her first year of high school after surviving a horrific incident the summer prior.
There are a few things to unpack when reading this book--the self-harm she inflicts to bide back her ongoing depression, the disconnect she has from her peers the more she isolates herself, the connection she makes with trees after assigned them in art class, the wolf/rabbit symbolism...
It is a raw story that requires time, but it's ultimately a story of recovery, and it's so good to hear this often silent girl finally roar when she absolutely needed to. The end of the book includes a list of resources and phone numbers for survivors of sexual assault, and if that isn't the best thing to close on, I don't know what is.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: Two scenes of sexual assault, but that comes with the territory of this book
