If you feel like an escape from today's world, read this well written, believable series. An independent woman in early 1900s New York City teams up with what may be the only honest police detective. They fight for social just for all victims of crime.

This first title in an ongoing series about a midwife in turn-of-the-century NYC reveals a fascinating look at the difference in the lives of different classes, and the rampant corruption of the police department. Sarah has been disowned after marrying "beneath her," and now that she is a widow, she supports herself by delivering babies. She sees all strata of society, and also much injustice. But investigating crime is difficult when the police department's interest is dependent on the size of the bribes they receive.

Fans of cozy and historical mysteries will enjoy this one! Very atmospheric in its setting of New York City in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Midwife Sarah Brandt and Sergeant Malloy, while an unlikely pair, team up to try to solve crimes. At a time when cops are corrupt and bribery/payoffs are common practice, Malloy works to solve the mystery on his own accord, even when others want the investigation to end.
