While there’s some mystery and intrigue in this drama, the main characters were likable and kept this book fresh and light. I can picture the setting and the 50’s Italian designer clothing. Each chapter was felt new. Enjoyable.

The heroine of this debut novel (of an American couple living in Italy in 1956) is a pretty, good-natured, spirited California transplant. Her sweetness informs the mood of the story which involves some tough political and social issues. As a CIA agent her husband's job requires him to use all means possible to sway the local city election toward the Christian Democratic candidate and away from the Communist. Both husband and wife bring other secrets to the marriage, he is gay, she is pregnant out of wedlock. Although this book wrestles with serious social and political issues of 1950's American culture, the essential good nature of the main characters and the pleasures of Italian life make this a very enjoyable read.
