Outstanding slam-bang adventure film which practically began the 'assemble the team' genre of movies. The team has to deal with a spy in their midst, an additional complication. Niven, Peck and Quinn are all excellent. Oscar-winning special effects and an exciting score. They don't get much better than this. That's intuitively obvious to even...The Most Casual Observer.

Directed by J. Lee Thompson in 1961 based on Alistair MacLean's 1957 novel, which was inspired by the Battle of Leros during the Dodecanese Campaign of World War II, this British-American war-time drama depicts the efforts of an Allied commando unit to destroy a seemingly impregnable German fortress that threatens Allied naval ships in the Aegean Sea.
With a well-crafted screenplay, this film turns out a fascinating entertaining piece packed with actions and thrills.
I enjoyed it to the hilt.

A great movie, excellent acting by fantastic actors. Gregory Peck, David Niven, and Anthony Quinn headline this Oscar and Golden Globes winning film. The slow moments are well worth watching in order to enjoy the fullness/scope of the story.

I read the novel years ago and I quite enjoyed this war action thriller ... but why would the Germans place their monster guns 10m below the level of the access tunnel which makes them awkward to install and slow to serve (by elevator)?

Commodore Jensen [speaking to his batman Sidney]: "Anything can happen in a war. Slap in the middle of absolute insanity people pull out the most extraordinary resources of ingenuity, courage, self-sacrifice ... Pity we can't beat the problems of peace in the same way, isn't it. It would be so much cheaper for everyone."
Batman Sidney: "I never thought of it in just that way, sir. You're a philosopher, sir."
Comm. Jensen: "No, I'm just the man who has to send people out on [very risky sabotage] jobs like this one."
