No character in this book is without flaws or virtues, which makes sense because much of the book explores what it really means to be human. The setting is easy to envision with Card's approachable descriptions, thus leaving more room for the story itself to take shape. While it does take a bit of time to get rolling, it is worth the wait.

Many people, myself included, have found it hard to "get into" this novel and have set it aside after the first 100 pages or so. I did that twice. But this summer, having run across a complete set of OSC's novel's at a thrift shop, I gave it another try. OSC is one of my favorite authors and his work is always rewarding, so I thought "It MUST get better, right?" Well it goes. Dear reader, I know the main character is not sympathetic at first. I know the whole family seems like a bunch of jerks, and the world does not seem that interesting. TRUST ME. You need to soldier through the first half of this book, then it gets easier. By the end you will be running to the library to get the next book in the series. And then you will be rewarded. This is a very interesting series. It's worth the effort.

I may have a bit of a bias towards OSC (or Uncle Orson as I like to call him - he's not really my uncle) because of my absolute adoration for Ender's Game, but his Homecoming series, beginning with this book, Memory of Earth, puts all others to shame.

Yes, including the Ender saga. While I love Ender's Game, it could have ended there for me. The other books were enjoyable, but not in the way the full Homecoming series is.

Set thousands of years in the future, when humans have colonized other planets, memories of Earth begin to awaken, and a family follows its call. Written in the perfect style you know and love from OSC, the Homecoming series is a must for any sci-fi lover!
