Aleta Thornhill, a waitress at the Dust Bowl Diner,is planning her wedding to Delbert Stump, the diner's owner, when his interfering mother reveals something so shocking about Aleta that Delbert disappears. Aleta gets her friend, Rick, to drive her to Amarillo, Texas, where she finds Delbert in a motel room and attempts to talk things out. But a boozy woman staggers in, blowing Delbert's credibility and sending Aleta home, angry and hurt, to spend the night with Rick. The lovers finally make up -- until Aleta makes a visit to her mother's grave on her wedding day. There, joined by Delbert and others, she discovers that they both harbor secrets that, put together, just might cancel the wedding.
