If you are like me, perhaps you’ve been suffering under the delicious delusion that Elaine Stritch is that rarest of performers; one who can do no wrong. This series from the Seventies proves that, alas, the piano does NOT write the concerto, and in fact is quite capable of playing some very sour notes. This overly laugh-tracked, underly clever, unduly clichéd piece of flotsam should have been quietly left to molder in the London Weekend Television vaults so that all of us could retain our illusions about the gal whose gifts even Sir Noel Coward celebrated. Not only is she not able to leaven these dreary proceedings, but she actually seems to be behind the beat much of the time—and if one needed proof that alcohol takes its toll on timing, one need look no further than “Two’s Company”. It’s exceedingly bad company. (Sometimes it’s better just to be left alone).
