Odessa is an oil town in the western part of Texas that is home to the Permian High School Panthers, the football team with the best winning record. The city's economy is in a tailspin, but football is the one thing that brings all the people of Odessa together, and on Friday nights, as many as 20,000 people fill Permian's football stadium to watch Coach Gary Gaines lead the team to victory. And in Odessa, a football victory is prized above all else. The players ponder the fact that there is little future in their hometown ... and that a championship season can be as much a burden as a triumph.

Book is supposed to be about the effects of HS football on small town Texas. But movie is less about that and more like a sports movie. Nevertheless, good, well done and engaging.

I thought this was VERY POORLY done. I thought as the series came out, the movies improved greatly.

I liked the coach that Tammy was married to better in the series. This same man DID NOT play a very good alcoholic in this movie.

Excellent movie, surprisingly real but not a family movie along the lines of Invincible or Remember the Titans. Great character development.

Beautiful cinamatography, but incredibly sad story. There is no happy ending in sight.

Odessa, Texas, is a small, town in Texas. Racially divided and economically dying, there is one night that gives the town something to live for: Friday Night. The Permian Panthers have a big winning tradition in Texas high school football, led by QB Mike Winchell and superstar tailback Boobie Miles, but all is not well, as Boobie suffers a career-ending injury in the first game of the season. Hope is lost among citizens in Odessa, and for the team, but Coach Gary Gaines, who believes that "Perfection is being able to look your friends in the eye and know you did everything you could not to let them down", is somehow able to help the team rise up from the ashes and make a huge season comeback. Now on their way to state, the Panthers must go out and be perfect, because they may never matter this much for the rest of their lives
