One of the few musical films that I enjoy more than the original stage production, most likely due to the fact that the live stage cannot replicate everything Hollywood does - though the stage does have its own unique charms. With the film, a viewer can drift from reality to fantasy and back again in a heartbeat without losing any momentum. Filled with glitter, classy, and big brassy numbers, this movie musical is definitely in the best of the best.

Great music, great dancing, great movie!

Chicago was such a dazzling and stunning film to watch, and the singing and acting was amazing; all of the cast, especially Catherine Zeta-Jones (Velma Kelly) and Renée Zellweger (Roxie Hart), were incredibly talented and captivating to watch. The musical performances were enthralling, not just from the singing but, because of the dancing, setting, costumes, and lighting. What I found really interesting about this film is how they approached the musical numbers. Each was done as if the characters were performing on a stage in front of a live audience, cutting back-and-forth between the stage and the actual story going on, yet the two were still connected. This allowed for the use of stage lighting which was cool, impressive and intense choreography, and generally all the over-the-top makeup and directing that is live theatre. The costumes were absolutely astonishing, sparkling with sequins, glitter, and intricate detail. The story is also very fun to follow through a musical perspective since, although the main idea is the character Roxie trying to find fame, it revolves around the murder she committed, and the journey she goes on to regain her freedom is full of drama, suspense, and excitement. Overall, it is such an interesting plot to a musical. I highly recommend this striking movie! 5/5 stars. @demi.god.on.a.mission of the Hamilton Public Library

Wanted to rewatch that great opening number.

One of my top two movie musicals of all time. It's the defining version of the production and rightly so.

I liked the music and the dancing and the overall theme.

Directed and choreographed by Rob Marshall in 2002 based on the stage-musical of the same name, this American musical crime dramedy seems to explore the themes of celebrity, scandal, and corruption in Chicago during the Jazz Age.
A supposedly rousing and energetic adaptation of the Broadway musical turns out to be a mangled dramedy so lacking in substance, if not a total flop.
What a pity with so many talented actors performing to a badly crafted script!

I like classic musicals, but this one missed the target for me. Perhaps better with a different cast.

GREAT 2002 musical romance plus film. Excellent acting by various performers - and terrific contemporary film making/choreography, etc. This rates way up there in the genre; glad to see it continue to evolve.

Sensational! Didn't even know Richard Gere could sing. Or Zeta-Jones. Zellweger is sensational!
