This has a really convoluted plot and the only thing that saves it is the strength of the writing. The author was trying too hard to try and get a woman in charge of the men, that it really detracted from parts of the story. Unfortunately, this is an age where women were not respected, not even considered human by "property" of the men in their lives, unless they were rich widows. We don't read these books to do anything other than flake out into a happy space where good triumphs over evil and the girl gets the boy (and has at least some fun along the way).
