I'm not entirely sure what The Twelve Kingdoms is trying to accomplish. It's pretty enough, but the cover style differs significantly from the actual animation. The world of the Twelve Kingdoms is intriguing, but the show spends too much time explaining how things work, as opposed to showing. While some of the themes hearken to other fantasy anime like Inuyasha, the overall mood of The Twelve Kingdoms is somber, borderline depressing; this keeps it from being fun or entertaining.

Also the protagonist vaguely looks like Starfire from Teen Titans.
