Manga Mania, Week 3
Manga is a term used to describe comics and graphic novels created in Japan. Since the boom of the United States' manga distribution in the mid to late 2000s, many series have found their home on our shelves. And with so many titles to go through, Manga Mania is a 4-part series of articles where we go through a few titles for different age groups! This week, we're continuing to cover… (more)

Add a CommentLoved it! Amazing series, I'm currently on volume 29 and I'm hooked! The charters are loveable, and the story line is good! Five stars!
Hands down the best manga of all time (no, seriously, it holds the Guinness World record for the best-selling manga at 455 million copies worldwide). Eiichiro Oda is a genius. Yes, it's long-- years long, but more than worth it if you decide to make the commitment.
Luffy is the most loveable, caring, brave character I have ever seen in any manga. Previous comments state that Luffy is "too positive." You will learn that, like in real life, obstacles will definitely come along and Luffy is not always the over-the-top positive character he has the reputation of being. Unlike other characters in manga (Goku, for example), Luffy is not invincible and loses as many times as he wins. It is impossible not to fall in love with him and the rest of the Straw Hat pirates, as well as many protagonists and even antagonists.
There are countless arcs, and for each of them, Oda dedicates time and patience to develop every single character the Straw Hats come in contact with. These characters return at some point in time much later in the series, so even if they are forgotten for a while they will return. The art is incredible-- there is always a focus on scenery and character detail. Oda is a master at setting a mood for every panel of the manga even if words are not present. But when there are words present, the manga is hilarious. This series has made me laugh/cry/cringe/smile more times than I can remember.
One Piece starts slow, but again, if you stick with it you will see that it deserves every bit of the hype. Get into it now, before you fall behind more. Trust me, you will catch up much faster than you think!
Very colorful story and not inappropriate.
My most favorite manga only 2nd to "A silent Voice"
A MUST READ!
LUFFY IS SOOOOO CUTESY!!! seriously, this is a manga i can get into (and its still going--past 70!)
I have not been able to get in to the anime, so I wouldn't say I am a big fan. I tend to find luffy a bit to optimist. That said, I can't deny there is some charm in this series. The good character are very alikable and the world has this fun light hearted cartoonish feel. The first book has my attention and I will read the next for sure. So I remain it to anyone that wants something a but lighthearted and cartoonish, and doesn't mind very optimist main lead.
Not an exciting start, but bear with it... this is THE best manga series ever!
