In the 1890's Frank T. Hopkins, a former U.S. Cavalry dispatch rider who is haunted by memories of what he saw at the battle of Wounded Knee, and his mustang Hidalgo, are performing in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, billed as the greatest horse and rider the West has ever known. This leads them to be invited to run in the 3,000 mile endurance race across the Middle Eastern desert, the Ocean of Fire, by one of the leading Arabian Sheiks. The race soon becomes not only a matter of pride and honor for Frank, but a race for his very survival as he and his horse attempt the impossible.

Don't let the "Based on a true story" fool you. This is 99.99% fiction and that's okay. It's fun entertainment. Just don't think it's a biography of a real person and real events or real anything for that matter. Snack on some veggie chips and baba ganoush.

I enjoyed this movie very much. Well written, acted cowboy yarn, based in truth.

Historical inaccuracies and controversies aside, Hidalgo is my favorite 'Western' (or should it be called 'Eastern? Middle Eastern?). Viggo Mortensen pulls it off well, the titular horse is just as much a character as everyone else, and it's above all FUN.

Viggo Mortensen totally nailed this role. It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time, laughing and hardly breathing. I expect to rewatch it several times in the future!

Didn't realize this was a Disney production. Very American and predictable, but not bad.

This is one of the best movies that most people have never seen. I have watched it dozens of times and enjoy it everytime. Well written and constructed, the plot takes a new turn just when you think things are going to slow down. It gets off to a bit of a slow start, but stay with it; it's well worth it.

Very lovable story! I enjoyed this movie very much. One of the few non cheesy, horribly made horse movies out there. Would definitely watch it again somtime.

I hadn't watched this for many years. I thoroughly enjoyed this re-watch. Not a great reflective movie but definitely a lovely few hours of entertainment.

Violence: Hidalgo contains wild west violence, involving guns, spears, and swords. Not gory or disgusting though
