Gunshot Road
Book - 2010
"The same day that Emily Tempest is supposed to start as Aboriginal Community Police officer for her outback township, her old friend, Superintendent Tom MacGillivray, is hospitalized, and she finds herself working for an uptight, by-the-book new sergeant. Being allergic both to authority and to keeping her big mouth shut, Emily is immediately at odds with him. A death at the Green Swamp Well Roadhouse only complicates things, Sergeant Cockburn thinks it's a simple case of two old drunks and a hammer. Emily's not convinced. Add to the mix a Tibetan sculptor and a rash of unexplained illnesses, and Emily has a unique puzzle on her hands"-- Cover, p. 2.

Add a CommentThis is such an interesting novel. He writes very well and his main character is just brilliant. As someone who is interested in what has happened to First Nations in BC and Canada, getting this view of Aboriginal people in Australia was very helpful. He treats his characters with tenderness.
My first Adrian Hyland was Diamond Dove, which I really enjoyed and now, Gunshot Road has me hooked. I love the main character, Emily Tempest, who is an Aboriginal Community police officer working in the harsh land of Northern Australia where she grew up. Hyland grabs you from the first page and keeps you till the end. A wonderful read.
