I would say the book is a mix of James Lee Burke and Carl Hiassen with a dash of Stephen King. Excellent writing, characters well-defined with a few astute observations, well-paced action, a slowly revealed mystery with a touch of the supernatural: the book is so very hard to put down. Dark but hilarious at the same time with a complex cast of oddballs, it's definitely Coen brothers material. Highly recommended.

Fun read. I also thought of the Coen Brothers as I read this book. Since there were so many characters, I liked how the chapters were titled in case I needed to go back and refresh.

The plot expands from the disappearance of a child into historical mysteries in a small town. Loved it, what a fun ride! reads like a Coen Brothers movie, I'll have to check out his other titles.

Niceville! is a very busy novel - like two novels compressed into one, actually. One story is about a family curse, told in southern gothic style, the other about the mass murder of police officers, during a bank robbery gone wrong.

It's a decent read; it's just a little overwhelming as far as plot lines. Stroud does a good job keeping them separate yet woven. Still the overall effect is perhaps he could have condensed things a little more.

The supernatural element - a difficult genre to master - just barely skirts being cheesy - unbelievably written. Parts are quite good. In fact, the first section of the book is very great, fast-paced reading. It just slows a bit from there.

So, not bad but not great. Worth a try if it sounds like your thing.
