I borrowed the first season and thought the episodes were too long and a bit dull. The second season is much better the main actor James Nesbitt who plays Murphy took creative control of the series and I think that made it much better. Murphy is an undercover detective in the London police force (the national Crime Squad). He is from Belfast, Ireland, so much of the time people are teasing him for his accent, calling him Paddy, and making lots of Irish jokes. Thought season 2 was better because the episodes are an hour long (season 1 they were 90 minutes) and the stories are a bit better resolved. Northern Ireland still comes across as some sort of militant/political nation and in this series it often seems that there is some sort of Northern Ireland mafia - maybe that is true or maybe it comes across that way since it takes place in a crime setting. The first season was a bit fuzzy about how his marriage dissolved when his daughter was killed by by the IRA. An episode in season 2 helps clarify that story line. My only dislike is that he has a new girlfriend in every episode and she is usually involved in the crime/underworld or is a co-worker - either way you know it isn't going to work out! Overall, a good detective series. Series went on for 5 years, so may have to request SPL to purchase season 4 & 5, but I've got season 3 yet to watch!
another brilliant British tv show that concentrates on dialogue & character instead of shoot-em-ups. i cant get enough of brilliant brit tv
