I read the prequels before reading “Practical Magic” so I have been reading about their family stories for centuries now. It’s a bit of a relief to be done, I definitely think that this last book is the best of the trilogy. I liked how the same antidotes were in each book such as always were blue for good luck and using the black soap for a good complexion. Alice Hoffman seems to repeat the same characters in each book though; I don’t know if it was intentional but all of the women in the Owen’s family are basically the same just living in different time periods. I’m glad I read this because I consider it to a classic but it just wasn’t my favorite read ever. I haven’t seen the movie yet so I’ll do that next to see if it’s any better.

An okay read. Seems to go on and on forever before there are big and small resolutions to respective problems.

Pretty writing but no plot and for the most part, shallow, immature characters. I did not finish the book.

Missed the movie but pretty sure I would like it even though it would by necessity be different. It was a good summer book and will likely read the prequel.

Not like the movie! The movie tried it's best to depict Sally's cold and mean streak. Jillian gets married several times and they are not close like in the movie. The ending in the movie is definitely made up by Hollywood, but I actually love it. The movie is more relevant now than ever before. Mr. Hallet is not summoned via a spell but rather is just naturally enchanted by Sally. The aunts have a very little role and they don't live them. I think they should've kept the scene in the book with the drug store girl more, the dove scene is the drug store girl but the side story of that woman should've been depicted a bit more. Sally's girls are teenagers in the book and in the movie they are little girls. I don't regret reading it but I think this is a rare occasion where the movie is better than the book.

A fun read with fantastic characters. I loved it

I love, love, love this movie. The book is nothing like it of course. I still liked it, I like Alice Hoffeman's story telling, but there is no "Magic" in the book version of Practical magic.
Gillian and Sally don't really have powers. They are both beautiful. Gillian can make a man fall for her and sally is a strong independent woman raising two daughters alone after her true love husband dies in a freak accident.. but neither character is witchy. They are both normal women trying to figure out who they are and run away from their past.. and there is some love thrown in.. but no famous Owen's curse to break. They get haunted by a ghost after burying the body of Gillian's no good boyfriend in the yard, oops she thinks she killed him with nightshade, she was giving him so he would not beat her.

the most interesting part of this is Sally's daughters who are teenagers in the book version.. not little kids.
The Aunts are not around much either. This is one case where the movie is better than the book. that being said if you like the movie.. read "The rules of magic" its the story of the Aunts and how they grew up facing the owen's family curse.. the prequel seems more like a prequel to the movie that to the book.

I love Alice Hoffman. I love her characters and their relationships and the mix of knowing and unknowing they all have. My first book of hers was the prequel and I’ve literally been consuming everything of hers I can get my hands on since. There are so many layers to everyone. She is magic for me. If you are someone who feels a little on the outside, a little different, maybe even for reasons you can’t put into words. Or someone who loves your family fiercely even though they make you crazy and are moderately to really dysfunctional, you will relate. I love my sister like crazy. She’s wild and I’m practical. We are both dreamers. These women are totally relatable for me. So much better than the movie. Great read. I would totally recommend to a friend.

I could not read this book because it made me fall asleep it was so hodrum boring. I tried and tried for 3 days to read but it just put me to sleep for about 2 hours. I am an insomniac that is lucky to get more than 2 hours a night of sleep so for this reason it was a good book for me but I am just soo bored with this book that I returned it early. Obviously it was not my cup of Tea . I cannot stand Oh Woe is me crap..
