Opinion

From Library Staff

Based on an ancient Japanese legend, The Tale of Princess Kaguya is beautiful and though-provoking. It lacks the typical stylized animation typical of most Japanese and anime, but still conveys deep emotion.

A Japanese classic, told by a modern staple of Japanese animation. It's well directed and animated.

Meh. Beautiful in many ways, just not my thing. I don't think this is for children, the story is so wandering and has some heavy themes and unsatisfactory ending. Yet it seems too simplistic and Disney-ish for adults.

Fine music score from Joe Hisaishi.

I have to say I find the story line a little fragmented. However, this is more than made up by the animation, mostly done by hands, which at times offer stunningly beautiful imagery. Augmented by a great score, this 2-hour-plus film from the Ghibli Studio offers a great viewing experience.

Unspeakably beautiful film full of spiritual wisdom, embracing the totality of the human experience. This film excels on multiple levels and communicates to all people at every stage of life. I highly recommend it.

Strange and compelling. For fans of Studio Ghibli (particularly the less known director, Isao Takahata), this film will appeal. Such an interesting tale in such a unique animation form that took me some time to get used to, but that I loved in the end, it was so exquisite. The story went from incredibly simple and sweet, to complex and deep and depressing. Do not expect a fairy tale in this movie. If anything, it's a tragedy. But the journey is so colorful and eye-catching (even sometimes humorous) that you can't help loving Kaguya and feeling for her as a character. She truly is the star of the movie.
Although it will never take the crown from my favorite Studio Ghibli films, it was very out-of-the-box and story-like. The realism here does not come from the animation (which gives more of the impression of a legend being re-told by painting it on a canvas), but from the characters and their plight. It's definitely Ghibli and definitely Takahata, I will say that.

Like many of the films from Studio Ghibli, there are messages to learn and the stories told are best appreciated by 10yr old and up viewers. This film shows how good intentions stifle the main character's wishes and wants in order to get ahead in the world.

Yeah, I cried. But hid it well by scratching corner of my eye. Allergies, you know.

Wow, what beautiful music and art work. The story had me pulled in. I wasn't even sure how it would end but I have to agree with muunlight; the ending was so sad I couldn't help but cry! This is defiantly not your happily-ever-after Disney movie but it is a beautiful story.

Sexual Content: A prince who comes to seek Kaguya for her beauty is kind of a creeper. A married man lies and seeks Kaguya's love, but is found out when his wife confronts him. Another married man asks to run away with her, forsaking his wife and child.

Other: In the official PG rating, it mentions the movie contains "partial nudity". This includes when women breastfeed and baby/toddler-age boys and girls run around without clothes that cover all of their private areas. It's not in detail, but it's clear to see.
