This is a hard-hitting comic thus far. Death's younger brother, Dream a.k.a. The Sandman, has finally escaped a long imprisonment and is now on a quest to track down the magical possessions that have been stolen from him (i.e. his pouch of dream powder, his crown, and a ruby that contains his essence and doubles as a key to control the dream world). On the way, we encounter characters both human and mythical, visit Arkham Asylum and Dante's vision of Hell, and we meet Death, who is ultimately less harrowing than one would imagine. The artwork is expansive and delightfully morbid, and Neil Gaiman's storytelling abilities are more than impressive, even in the sometimes clunky plots that encompass these first eight issues. I look forward to seeing where Dream takes us next.
