"'No matter where you go, no matter whether you succeed or fail, stand or fall, no gone is too far gone. You can always come home.' At the age of eighteen, musician and songwriter Cooper O'Connor took everything his father held dear and drove 1,200 miles from home to Nashville, his life riding on a six-string guitar and the bold wager that he had talent. But his wager soon proved foolish. Five years after losing everything, he falls in love with Daley Cross, an angelic voice in need of a song. But just as he realizes his love for Daley, Cooper faces a tragedy that threatens his life as well as his career. With nowhere else to go, he returns to his remote home in the Colorado Mountains, searching for answers about his father and his faith. When Daley shows up on his street corner twenty years later, he wonders if it's too late to tell her the truth about his past and if he is ready to face it. A radical retelling of the story of the prodigal son, Long Way Gone takes us from tent revivals to the Ryman Auditorium to the tender relationship between a broken man and the father who never stopped calling him home"-- Provided by publisher.

Disappointing compared to other books of his I have enjoyed. I get that it's a Christian-based book but it didn't work for me. It starts out as a popular fiction type book, throws in a lot of incorrect medical information, and then wraps up with a heavy dose of spirituality. Too much of a mixed bag. And he gets way too wordy at times.

This is now my favorite work of fiction I've ever come across. I don't even play a guitar.

This was an interesting story. It had many unbelievable parts but it is a 'story' after all! The first book I read by Charles Martin was 'The Mountain Between Us' and that was excellent! This is what prompted me to read another by the same author. I really enjoyed the parts that deal with guitars, the different makes and all the facts about guitars. Everything about music was very interesting. Just going by the two books that I have read by this author I have the feeling he researches his subject very well.

Excellent book! This book grabbed my attention immediately and I didn’t want to put it down. The characters were interesting and I enjoyed the story line. While the content was clean and one of the characters is a preacher, I wouldn’t necessarily label the book as “Christian fiction” because the theology is off. That being said, as a Christian I enjoyed reading the book and there was no content that bothered my conscience.

This Is one of my favorites. I listened to it on Hoopla and was so impressed with the correlation between this character's life and the prodigal son. It was a great story of a guy who left his true love for unselfish reasons and yet they were reunited. I loved all the song references and felt like i was there listening to 'Daley' sing her way through the classic rock, folk and blues tunes! Listen to it on Hoopla. You'll love it!

I have liked everything I have read by this writer and especially love this one. Charles Martin's characters are complex and engaging. This one has parallels to the The Prodigal son in a modern context. I think people who are not Christians can thoroughly enjoy it but for those who are it is even more moving. Can't wait for Send Down the Rain on May 8!

Excellent book! Would highly recommend! I have read other books by this author, and this one too does not disappoint. An excellent book reflecting love, grace and forgiveness. The prodigal son epitomized.

Great book - beautiful prose and wonderful insight into human nature and tendencies. This book reminds me very much of Lief Enger's Peace like a River. I will highly recommend this book.

First time reading Charles Martin and I am completely hooked. He is an excellent writer and you can literally see and feel the images he puts on paper. Long Way Gone can resonate somewhere within all of us for our mistaken paths we have chosen, words we regret never saying and love lost and perhaps found again. While the tale is somewhat sad, it is also filled with a joy within and expected pleasures in life, mother nature and the great wonder of our world.
