John James Audubon's story is dramatic and surprising. He was not born in America, but saw more of the North American continent than virtually anyone alive. His growing apprehension about the destruction of nature became his prophecy. As an artist and naturalist his achievements were monumental. John James Audubon: Drawn from Nature creates a meaningful portrait of Art and Science in the first decades of the 19th century.

I really like Audubon's paintings of wildlife, especially his excellent pictures of birds.

John James Audubon is probably one of America's most famous and greatly admired nature artists of all time.

Audubon was born in 1785. And when he emigrated from Haiti to America in 1803 (at the age of 18) - That's when his great interest in painting wildlife became his life's passion.

This 60-minute "Audubon" documentary not only looks at the positive side of John's character - But, it also points out the negative side, as well.

Presented by the PBS Network through their "American Masters" series - "Drawn From Nature" is a 1-hour bio-documentary that looks at the life and artistic career of John James Audubon.

Born (1785) in Haiti - (ornithologist/naturalist/painter) John Audubon developed a keen interest in art at a very early age which was enthusiastically encouraged by his parents.

Through interviews with artists and art historians - This enjoyable presentation gives the spectator a good overview of the artistic legacy of John Audubon (who died in 1851 from Alzheimer's disease).

I had no idea the namesake of the Audubon Society had such a history. I can only hope the right people make his life into a major release movie someday .

For myself, it's difficult to find fault with PBS' American Masters series and this installment only affirms this belief. The life and career of John James Audubon feels astounding to me now! And makes me want to inquire further. My only grievance with this film is the wish for more time. To have had it cover more of the intricacies mentioned would have been a gift.
