The handsome (Redford), young son of the former governor, a lawyer for liberal causes, has managed to avoid the stain of political knowledge. He lives a comfortable, professional life with his wife and family, though he likes to think he cares about the plight of poor people and minorities more than most people do. A central feature of his life up to this point has been his refusal to get down and dirty by running for public office. So who are all these political flacks, and why do they think he can be the next senator from California. This is such a long shot. Why would he do it? How could he do it?

Great movie about the ironies and unpleasant realities of the American political process. Redford is in his youthful prime and he is both winning and cynical as the idealistic Senator-to-be who learns some hard lessons on his way to glory. A commentary track featuring Redford, director Ritchie and screenwriter Larner would be a welcome plus, but alas.
